In our company, the engineers also use different software for flow calculations, depending on the application. For the visualisation of the results, however, we mostly use only 1 product – and this has been the case for many years: FieldView.

What we appreciate about FieldView is the ease of use, the high degree of automation when comparing calculation results of geometry and case variants, the enormous number of interfaces to commercial and non-commercial flow simulation programmes and the handling of large and very large amounts of data in client-server mode.

An example: The first two pictures show two variants of the flow through an aneurysm in a blood vessel. Differences in pressure are difficult to see. If you use the “Dataset Comparison” feature to compare the pressure in image 2 with the pressure in image 1, the existing pressure differences can be elegantly visualised (red: higher pressure, grey: identical pressure, blue: lower pressure).

Visualisation with FieldView

The automation of repetitive tasks is also very conveniently solved by restart files and – if required – the script language FVX. Visualisations can thus actually be created with a click of the mouse.

Thanks to comprehensive downward compatibility, result files and self programmed routines can still be read into the latest FieldView version without any problems, even after many years. And the development of FieldView continues: one focus is on processing the enormous amounts of data that arise due to the rapidly growing hardware performance in three-dimensional flow calculations – Big data!

CFD Consultants and Kombyne™: Visualisation and Data Analysis for HPC simulations



“Can we calculate the flow process with 500 million cells time-dependent?” – “Yes.”
“Can we also evaluate it?” – “Yes, but…”

Engineers who deal with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), for example in the fields of automotive engineering, aeronautics or in academic research and development, know the phenomenon: in CFD simulations, especially in projects with a large number of grid cells and transient calculation methods, enormous amounts of data are generated during the course of the calculation. Handling them, writing and reading the data, often proves to be a bottleneck during the workflow.

Our long-standing software partner, the data specialists from Intelligent Light, have now developed Kombyne™, a High Performance Computing (HPC) library that allows the user to extract and render result data in real time during the running CFD calculation without significantly disturbing the working memory and computing power (keywords: “on the fly”/”in-situ”/”in-transit”). Furthermore, Kombyne is also able to control CFD calculations during the run (“steering”). Details on the functionality and programme features of Kombyne™ can be found here.

CFD Consultants GmbH has been involved in the project for years: In order to make Kombyne™ available for the various CFD codes, interfaces to these codes have to be programmed. Our engineer René Thümmler was involved in the integration of Kombyne™ into the CFD code Hydra. Hydra is the in-house calculation tool of the turbine manufacturer Rolls-Royce for the aerodynamic design of gas turbines. An article on the calculation of compressor maps of a multi-stage axial compressor using Kombyne™ calculation control was published in January 2022 in San Diego as part of the AIAA SCITECH 2022 Forum (link to article and video presentation).

And the development of the interfaces from Kombyne™ to the CFD codes by René Thümmler continues: The connection of Kombyne™ to OpenFOAM is completed. The integration into other solvers is in progress. Further interfaces will follow.

The Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern writes the following on its homepage:

 

Mit Wirkung zum 25. Mai 2021 wurde Herr Prof. Dr.-Ing. Volker Kassera zum Honorarprofessor der Technischen Universität Kaiserslautern ernannt. Prof. Kassera ist seit mehr als 15 Jahren als externer Lehrbeauftragter im Bereich der Strömungslehre (CFD-Simulation) im Fachbereich Maschinenbau und Verfahrenstechnik tätig.

Er studierte an der TU München Maschinenbau und promovierte dort 1996 mit dem Thema „Entwicklung eines numerischen Berechnungsverfahrens für Schwingungen querangeströmter Rohrbündel“. Hierbei erstellte er eigene CFD Codes zur Simulation der Fluid-Struktur-Kopplung. Seit 1998 ist er Mitinhaber bzw. Geschäftsführer der CFD Consultants GmbH.

Der Fachbereich Maschinenbau und Verfahrenstechnik heißt Herrn Prof. Kassera als Honorarprofessor im Fachbereich herzlich willkommen und freut sich auf die weitere Zusammenarbeit.

Ibrahim Başhoruz was involved in various projects in our company, for example in the areas of automobile racing, wind tunnel, flow around buildings or the flow around wing profiles and worked very well into the operation of software tools for numerical flow simulations (CAD data preparation and pre-processing with Rhino and Pointwise, numerical simulation with Ansys Fluent, post-processing with FieldView).

During the lecture Fluid Mechanics III – CFD and the exercise in CFD, which our managing director Dr. Volker Kassera held this year purely virtually as a video conference with ZOOM for the students of the Chair of Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machinery (SAM) at the Technical University of Kaiserlautern, he was always happy to assist.

Panel method in active use

In a cooperation project* with the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, CFD Consultants GmbH is currently developing a panel method for the fast calculation of aerodynamic coefficients of arbitrary 3D geometries.

The panel method shows its strength especially when many approximate aerodynamic calculations are required. With these methods, a large number of geometric and boundary condition variants can be carried out within a very short time, which would not be possible with other methods of fluid mechanics, neither economically nor in terms of time.

During the development of the program, special attention was paid from the beginning to a simple connection to existing meshing and postprocessing tools. Thus, the program can already be actively used for projects in the company CFD Consultants GmbH today.

The following is a short description of a typical project on an unmanned cargo aircraft using the panel method:

No special CAD programs are required for the generation of geometry. Typically, our company uses Rhino 3D, SOLIDWORKS or SpaceClaim.

The generated geometry is usually imported into a meshing program via an IGES or STEP interface. Since the panel method itself does not require meshing in the volume but only on the geometry surface, the three-dimensional outer contour can be meshed very quickly with appropriate grid elements, the panels and namesakes of the method. A specially developed plugin in Pointwise is used to export the geometry in the format required for the panel method. Individual components can be identified by name and can therefore be specifically examined in later postprocessing.

The equation system can be set up and solved by the actual calculation program on a desktop computer. Larger hardware resources are not necessary. The equation solver has already been parallelized as far as possible for shortest possible computing times. With 16GB RAM mesh sizes up to about 20000 panels can be calculated within minutes. At the end of the calculation, flow velocities, force and pressure distributions as well as aerodynamic characteristics are available.

Via different export interfaces (VTK, CGNS, etc.) the calculation results can be visualized in a postprocessor like FIELDVIEW, ParaView or VisIT.

CFD in medical technology

In medical technology, flow processes are often decisive: blood, NaCl solutions, disinfectants, air and oxygen are typical fluids. On the one hand, these fluids flow in the human body, on the other hand through technical apparatus such as pumps, artificial heart valves, hose lines, respirators, nebulizers, inhalers, dialyzers, etc. Active substances are dissolved and should be placed in a targeted manner, disinfectants must be used safely yet sparingly, air must be purified, oxygen must be supplied.

On the one hand, the individual shape of blood vessels, for example, plays a major role, while on the other hand, in the development of medical devices it is often details such as production-related gaps or trapped air bases that determine success or failure.

In both cases CFD calculation models provide the necessary insight:

In personalized medicine, for example, the blood vessels of a patient are recorded using imaging techniques and, based on this, a flow simulation is carried out. The result is the blood flow in the individual vessels under consideration, with all local and time-dependent pressures, shear stresses, vortices, backflow and “dead water areas”. The picture on the right shows an example of the blood flow through a cerebral vessel of a patient with a cerebral aneurysm (here you can find our detailed blog post about aneurysm).


Postprocessing with FIELDVIEW

CFD models are an essential part of virtual product development in the development of medical devices. The fluidic function can be checked and optimized, problem areas can be analyzed in detail. This reduces the development risk while increasing product quality. With today’s simulation methods, moving components, smallest gaps, multi-phase flows, mixing and segregation processes, particle and droplet loading, heat transfer and reactions can be represented in almost all size scales. The picture on the right shows e.g. undesired air inclusions (white areas) that form when filling an apparatus. Geometrical factors play an important role here. Physically, the shape of the free surfaces is strongly influenced by the surface tension between liquid and air and by the wall contact angle.

We have been developing such calculation models tailored to the needs of our customers for over 20 years. We combine their specific expertise with our simulation know-how and our physical understanding. Through participation in research projects and cooperation with universities and software providers, our methods are always state-of-the-art.

Good news about the aviation project TR230

CFD Consultants GmbH has been significantly involved in the aviation project TR230 for many years. This project concerns the development and certification of a modern four-seater passenger aircraft. The prototype has been flying since 2013, has almost completed flight testing and is about to be certified as an experimental aircraft in Switzerland.

Investors are being sought for the type certification. Through its subsidiary iViation GmbH, intensive contacts have been established for over two years with potential investors, including from China. In mid-March, an authorized representative of a well-known Chinese state-owned company intensively inspected the project. The draft of a joint venture contract was prepared, important cooperation partners explained their contributions and the business plan was agreed. The talks were very positive and were concluded with the signing of a letter of intent.
