										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The major providers of flow simulation software, such as <a href="https://www.ansys.com/de-de/products/fluids/ansys-fluent" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ansys Fluent</a>, <a class="_ps2id" href="https://www.ansys.com/products/fluids/ansys-cfx" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-ps2id-offset="">Ansys CFX</a>, <a href="https://www.plm.automation.siemens.com/global/de/products/simcenter/STAR-CCM.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Simcenter Star CCM+</a>, <a href="https://www.flow3d.com/">FLOW-3D<sup>®</sup></a> oder <a href="https://www.simerics.com/simerics-mp-plus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Simerics MP+</a> each offer in-program options for evaluating and visualising simulation results.</p>
<p>In our company, the engineers also use different software for flow calculations, depending on the application. For the visualisation of the results, however, we mostly use only 1 product &#8211; and this has been the case for many years: <a href="https://www.fieldviewcfd.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FieldView</a>.</p>
<p>What we appreciate about FieldView is the ease of use, the high degree of automation when comparing calculation results of geometry and case variants, the enormous number of <a href="https://www.fieldviewcfd.com/resources/solver-interfaces/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interfaces to commercial and non-commercial flow simulation programmes</a> and the handling of large and very large amounts of data in client-server mode.</p>
<p>An example: The first two pictures show two variants of the flow through an aneurysm in a blood vessel. Differences in pressure are difficult to see. If you use the &#8220;Dataset Comparison&#8221; feature to compare the pressure in image 2 with the pressure in image 1, the existing pressure differences can be elegantly visualised (red: higher pressure, grey: identical pressure, blue: lower pressure).</p>

<p>The automation of repetitive tasks is also very conveniently solved by restart files and &#8211; if required &#8211; the script language FVX. Visualisations can thus actually be created with a click of the mouse.</p>
<p>Thanks to comprehensive downward compatibility, result files and self programmed routines can still be read into the latest FieldView version without any problems, even after many years. And the development of FieldView continues: one focus is on processing the enormous amounts of data that arise due to the rapidly growing hardware performance in three-dimensional flow calculations &#8211; Big data!</p>

Handling them, writing and reading the data, often proves to be a bottleneck during the workflow.</p>
<p>Our long-standing software partner, the data specialists from <a href="https://www.ilight.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Intelligent Light</a>, have now developed <a href="http://kombyne.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kombyne™</a>, a High Performance Computing (HPC) library that allows the user to extract and render result data in real time during the running CFD calculation without significantly disturbing the working memory and computing power (keywords: &#8220;on the fly&#8221;/&#8221;in-situ&#8221;/&#8221;in-transit&#8221;). Furthermore, Kombyne is also able to control CFD calculations during the run (&#8220;steering&#8221;). <p>CFD Consultants GmbH has been involved in the project for years: In order to make Kombyne™ available for the various CFD codes, interfaces to these codes have to be programmed. Our engineer René Thümmler was involved in the integration of Kombyne™ into the CFD code Hydra. Hydra is the in-house calculation tool of the turbine manufacturer Rolls-Royce for the aerodynamic design of gas turbines. An article on the calculation of compressor maps of a multi-stage axial compressor using Kombyne™ calculation control was published in January 2022 in San Diego as part of the AIAA SCITECH 2022 Forum (link to <a href="https://arc.aiaa.org/doi/abs/10.2514/6.2022-1723" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article</a> and <a href="https://video.aiaa.org/title/b7d51fbd-c021-4a10-917f-3b8edb3280db" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video presentation</a>).</p>

<p>In a cooperation project* with the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, CFD Consultants GmbH is currently developing a panel method for the fast calculation of aerodynamic coefficients of arbitrary 3D geometries.</p>
<p>The panel method shows its strength especially when many approximate aerodynamic calculations are required. With these methods, a large number of geometric and boundary condition variants can be carried out within a very short time, which would not be possible with other methods of fluid mechanics, neither economically nor in terms of time.</p>
<p>During the development of the program, special attention was paid from the beginning to a simple connection to existing meshing and postprocessing tools. Thus, the program can already be actively used for projects in the company CFD Consultants GmbH today.</p>
<p>The following is a short description of a typical project on an unmanned cargo aircraft using the panel method:</p>

Since the panel method itself does not require meshing in the volume but only on the geometry surface, the three-dimensional outer contour can be meshed very quickly with appropriate grid elements, the panels and namesakes of the method. A specially developed plugin in Pointwise is used to export the geometry in the format required for the panel method. Individual components can be identified by name and can therefore be specifically examined in later postprocessing.</p>

Larger hardware resources are not necessary. The equation solver has already been parallelized as far as possible for shortest possible computing times. With 16GB RAM mesh sizes up to about 20000 panels can be calculated within minutes. At the end of the calculation, flow velocities, force and pressure distributions as well as aerodynamic characteristics are available.</p>

<p>CFD Consultants GmbH has been significantly involved in the aviation project TR230 for many years. This project concerns the development and certification of a modern four-seater passenger aircraft. The prototype has been flying since 2013, has almost completed flight testing and is about to be certified as an experimental aircraft in Switzerland.</p>

<p>Investors are being sought for the type certification. Through its subsidiary iViation GmbH, intensive contacts have been established for over two years with potential investors, including from China. In mid-March, an authorized representative of a well-known Chinese state-owned company intensively inspected the project. The draft of a joint venture contract was prepared, important cooperation partners explained their contributions and the business plan was agreed. The talks were very positive and were concluded with the signing of a letter of intent.</p>

<p>As part of the aviation research programme of the <a href="https://www.bmwi.de/Navigation/DE/Home/home.html">Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi)</a>the joint project PRESTIGE was launched in 2018. This project brings together partners from academic research and industry and is dedicated to the further development and validation of simulation methods to improve the interdisciplinary understanding of engine systems.<br />
One goal of the project is the numerical simulation of a transient flow through a complete engine compressor including its stationary and rotating components. In order to be able to compare the numerical investigation results with existing practical or experimental experience, a correspondingly fine grid resolution of the volume including all individual components is required. This leads to computational grids with several billion grid nodes, which can only be processed on supercomputers.<br />
Due to the unsteady effects within the engine system, a time-dependent investigation of the processes is necessary. This generates immense amounts of backup and evaluation files, the handling of which (read and write accesses, memory requirements) is associated with high time and cost-intensive expenditure. Possibilities to significantly reduce this effort by direct processing and evaluation during the running process (&#8220;in-situ&#8221;) is part of the research work within the PRESTIGE project. In-situ visualization enables the user to extract and process results directly from the memory of the process already during the running CFD simulation<br />
More powerful hardware and software enables ever more complex and realistic calculation models, so that in-situ evaluations will gain immensely in importance in the future.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.cfdconsultants.de/en/">CFD Consultants GmbH</a>, as an industrial partner in cooperation with Intelligent Light, a leading company in the field of CFD post-processing, has made a significant contribution to the joint project and was able to develop an in-situ visualization solution and successfully implement it in a CFD code.</p>

<p>This solution is not only suitable for large-scale projects, but is also interesting for all other fluidic simulation projects, especially for time-dependent investigations. This makes the method attractive for everyone who is involved in numerical flow simulation.</p>

<p>At the 3rd Industrial HPC User Round Table (iHURT) on 3 December 2019, a joint event of <span class="css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0"><a href="https://www.sicos-bw.de/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> SICOS BW GmbH</a></span> and the <a href="https://www.hlrs.de/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">High Performance Computing Centre Stuttgart (HLRS)</a>, current and future users of clusters and high performance computers came together. <p>The Managing Director of CFD Consultants GmbH, Dr. Volker Kassera, participated in the <strong>10th Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention on Technology Innovation and Cooperation &amp; Overseas Chinese Entrpreneurs Industrial Development Forum</strong> in Yantai in the Chinese province of Shandong on 29.10.2019.</p>
<p>The aim of the participation was to discuss with potential investors the project financing, development, certification and commercialization of a protptype.</p>
<p>The group of investors is currently evaluating the project and will come to Germany for talks in March 2020.</p>

<p>NAFEMS is an international organization promoting the safe and reliable application of simulation methods such as Finite Element Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamis (CFD). NAFEMS originally stood for &#8220;National Agency for Finite Element Methods and Standards&#8221;. Founded in Great Britain in 1983, NAFEMS has long since developed into an international society for the promotion of computational simulation.</p>
